Kate dreamed of being a veterinarian as a child, and then discovered she was allergic to everything with fur. At 18, she spent a year as a medical translator in Honduras, and there fell in love with women and their families.
Kate believes that birth is a normal, natural, process and that women are perfectly equipped to birth their babies safely and joyfully. Kate believes midwifery to be, primarily, a journey of education, empowerment and support alongside the families she serves. Kate supports choice of birthplace and believes informed consent to be critical component of the childbearing process. She sees the primary responsibility of a midwife as bearing witness and to being with women as they safely birth their children.
After earning a BA in International Development, she went on to study midwifery at Laurentian University in Sudbury, ON. She took some time off part-way through the midwifery program to birth two beautiful babies, and decided to return to midwifery studies at Maternidad La Luz, a Midwifery Education and Accreditation Council (MEAC) accredited midwifery school and high-volume birth center in El Paso, Texas. The birth center sees 60-90 births a month, all attended by students and overseen by licensed preceptors.
She earned her Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) designation in February 2014, and obtained her Texas midwifery license in April 2014. Kate worked as a staff midwife, preceptor and faculty member at Maternidad La Luz until February 2015. She has attended over 250 births, in homes, hospitals and birth center. She is so excited to be home again in the Maritimes, and is currently based in Saint John, NB.
Kate holds current certifications in Neonatal Resuscitation, CPR/AED for Health Care Providers, IV administration and O2 administration. She is a La Leche League Leader, doula, and passionate supporter of women.
Kate is studying herbalism for women under Dr. Aviva Romm, and has a certificate in homeopathy for midwives.
She is fluent, and happy to provide services in French, English, and Spanish.
Kate also works, very happily, as backup for doula Amanda McLure, in Saint John, NB. Amanda also acts as Kate’s backup for births.
